Music and Movement

Our music and movement program includes two program components. We are pleased to offer both the nationally recognized early childhood music and movement program called Music Together ® and our more formal musical instruction in violin program called “Sure Start for Strings.” Our students are immersed in a rich music environment that fosters spatial awareness, gross motor, loco motor, creative movement, listening, community building and cooperative learning skills as well as the ability to sing in tune, move in rhythm and begin playing a string instrument, the violin.

The children acquire an appreciation for music in a playful and developmentally appropriate manner. They sing and explore songs in various musical styles, tonalities and rhythms. Leadership skills are enhanced by encouraging the children to create musical patterns with their voice and musical instruments, by creating their own song verses and movement ideas and through creative expression during dramatic play activities. Parents are able to support their child’s education by using the Music Together ® CDs and songbooks at home and by participating in an after school family music activity each semester. Our program will support the children in achieving basic music competence and gaining the confidence that leads to future success in music or dance. Most importantly, they will be able to tap into the joys of making music which will benefit them throughout their lives.

Two research projects have found that music training - specifically piano instruction - can dramatically enhance children’s spatial-temporal reasoning skills, the skills crucial for greater success in subjects like math and science.
